Common questions and tips from our work with Levant customers.
- What do I need to start a custom fabrication project?
- A rough sketch with measurements is enough to start. Note what the piece has to hold or attach to, where it will live (inside, outside, near salt or water), and any finish you want. Photos of the spot it fits into help. From there the design gets worked out, the material picked and the build laid out.
- Should I choose steel or stainless steel?
- Mild steel is strong, easy to work and the usual pick for frames, brackets and gates, but it needs paint or coating to fight rust. Stainless resists corrosion and suits wet or food-related uses, but the material costs more. Where the piece will sit and how it will be used usually decide it.
Tip
Measure twice, and measure the mounting points
Most fit problems come from the attachment points, not the piece itself. Measure where bolts, hinges or brackets will mount, check the spot is square, and note any slope or uneven ground. If the piece attaches to equipment, write down the make and model. Good measurements up front save rework later.
